Yup, Texas done did it again. And ya know, a lot of Texas Methodists shore will be shocked that selling or drinking long-neck Buds is un-Methodist. Can you even two-step without one?
But I digress. The news out of the United Methodist world is (as far as queer acceptance goes) pretty damn good. Those northwest Texas congregations are leaving because the vast majority of the UMC denomination won't tolerate anti-LGBTQ teachings and practices anymore. Same-sex marriages happen in UMC churches all the time, and clergy are often gay married people, themselves.
A year or so ago, religion reporters wrote that a great Methodist schism was coming. But that petered out. It turns out that only about 6% of congregations are leaving, including those Bud-deprived Texas two-steppers.
As far as most of the rest of the denomination is concerned, it's "good riddance to bad rubbish," and once the disaffiliation process is complete, they'll move to formalize LGBTQ equality.
