Yup! I’m serializing a novel on Medium right now. It’s a gay, coming-of-age, Cold War thriller. Of 7 strongly drawn characters, two of them are gay, and none of them fit any kind of stereotype.

I think the story is more interesting for that. My characters overturn expectations. All of them are three dimensional and surprising. And isn’t that what good writing is supposed to be about?

Frankly, I get bored when I read or watch stories that are filled with stereotypes. If I already know what the writer or director is doing, what’s the point?

Believable characters are REAL characters, and that’s so much more fulfilling in fiction.
