Yup!
I write about LGBTQ people and edit articles by LGBTQ people every day. I occasionally misgender somebody by accident, and when I do, I apologize and move on.
In my latest article, I actually misgendered someone by accident in writing. I included an account of violence against a transgender teenager in Florida. The news article I used for my story did not have any pronouns. Since the young person had a traditionally masculine name and appeared to present in a masculine manner, I used, without thinking, he/him in a photo caption and in the article.
Digging deeper, however, I found a much more detailed news story that indicated the teenager uses she/her pronouns. I edited the article accordingly, but I forgot to edit the photo caption.
Within 30 minutes of publishing, a trans person sent me a note pointing out the misgendering.
I thank them for catching my error and immediately corrected the caption. My biggest emotion was embarrassment, because I had misgendered the teen due to lack of proper attention and proof reading
I was grateful to the person who pointed out my error. Then it was over. No need for anxiety or fear or anything.
We all make mistakes, and so long as we recognize them, and correct them, an apologize appropriately, we move on.
I work with trans people everyday, and have never experienced any serious drama over making an honest mistake.
