Yup! I was just reading about a school district where a conservative Christian mom is having a fit about drag queens and drag art. As per the usual narrative, she's objecting to kids being "sexualized." She even dressed up in drag at a school board meeting to demonstrate why drag is so horrible.
The thing is, she was completely covered up. There wasn't anything inherently sexual about her outfit. It was just glittery, sparkly, and colorful.
A news article I read made a big point of the the fact that she wasn't exposing skin and that there was nothing sexually objectionable about her outfit, despite her thinking there was. She was much more covered up than cheerleaders in the district, but she wasn't at the meeting to complain about teenage cheerleaders baring skin at every high school football game.
The article mentioned that cheerleaders in the school district wear more revealing outfits than drag queens typically do. Then the article alluded to the fact that high school football players dressed in cheerleader drag do a show at the high school in that district every year.
I know this for a fact, and I know they've been doing it for decades.
How?
I graduated from that high school, and I sat in the bleachers every year for 4 years watching high school football players do drag for the student body, teachers, coaches, parents, and sports boosters.
Nobody gasped in shock about it then, and nobody is gasping about it today, not even the mother at that school board meeting who claims drag sexualizes children.
The gasping doesn't start until people who call themselves drag queens do drag.
The issue really boils down to disdain for LGBTQ people. When people who are presumed straight do drag, just about nobody has a problem with it. When people who are presumed gay or trans do drag, only then do conservative Christians start to scream.
They make themselves perfectly clear: they don't hate drag, they hate us LGBTQ people.
