Yup! I published a personal story the other day about my safe space when I was 18 years old. It was a bar, and I loved it.
Fortunately, I’m not an alcoholic or disposed to be one. (My body doesn’t tolerate alcohol well.) But if I were, that space wouldn’t have been safe for me.
Lots of gay men and transgender women of my generation traditionally hung out in bars because we felt safe and accepted there. Lots of us struggle with alcohol addiction, and experts think it’s probably because bars were our normal safe spaces.
We do NEED safe spaces, and yes, we need places to go where alcohol isn’t the assumed norm.
