Your lovely story reminds me very much a wonderful cabin I used to visit regularly. It was in the mountains rather than on a lake, but much of the rest of it sounds quite similar to yours, wood smoke and all.

The most wonderful part of the cabin was that we could all just be ourselves without pressure.
