You remind me that the State of Florida recently dropped its education requirements for prospective teachers who come from the military. Veterans can now get teaching certificates without a college education.

No shade to vets as I am one myself, but serving in the military does not qualify a person to teach ... not any more than working any other job does.

I've known brilliant, empathetic people in the military who would probably make excellent teachers. I've known people in the military who are ignorant, uneducated outside their speciality, and are bullies to boot. They would likely make awful teachers.

The whole point of an education degree is to train teachers who will be effective in the classroom.

But here comes that insidiousness American folk hatred of higher education. And children who deserve good teachers will pay the price.
