You remind me of the superb mystery author Sara Paretsky and her protagonist V.I. Warshawski, Chicago’s "fiercest detective." I picked a novel up off a library shelf one day at random. Her writing sucked my in for several reasons, but perhaps the biggest one was the immersive dive it took me on into the southside of Chicago.
She clearly loves those neighborhoods and brings them to life in dimension-popping detail. I feel like I've visited there even though I've never physically ventured outside Chicago's more touristy areas.
It was her choice of place and her mastery of re-creating it in words that kept me coming back to a series of novels in a genre that has never, frankly, topped my favorites list.
