You make such critical points and illustrate them so well with a story that feels frightening and creepy.
It's also a VERY timely message.
Last week, the Miami-Dade school board rejected sex-education textbooks for middle and high school students because a fringe minority of parents were complaining about the textbooks and threatening to sue using Florida's Don't Say Gay law.
The textbooks empowered students with knowledge about real grooming, taught about bodily autonomy, and gave students critical information about sexually transmitted infections.
It's probable that for the entire next school year, as a result of this decision, middle and high school students in Miami-Dade will not be receiving any sex education.
This is because of a right-ring fringe of people accusing LGBTQ people of being groomers.
But that fringe just empowered the real groomers by ensuring that too many kids are going to stay ignorant.
By the way, of all the impassioned speakers at the school board meeting, 38 supported the textbook, and four opposed it. I'm not sure why they opposed it, since every parent in Miami-Dade already has the right to opt their own kids out of sex ed.
But because of the way the Don't Say Gay law is structured to allow for private lawsuits, the school board feels they can't take any chances.
So no sex ed for kids in Miami this school year.
Note to anyone paying attention, this is exactly what we advocates said would happen.
