You know, when I first visited Paris, one of my top priorities was locating the street where Oscar Wilde spent his last days, dying nearly alone and friendless in exile. I just HAD to visit!

We didn't have AP Lit when I was in high school, though I took several literature courses, one of which included some of Wilde's writing, and sometimes, even in the late 1970s, we discussed the queer themes, albeit very obliquely.

Our librarian, however, after directing me in his stage adaptation of Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest," saw to it that I read "Dorian Gray." Over the next couple years as he led the school's theater department, he asked me questions about the novel, which led me to understanding (and treasuring) the queer story within.

Like you, I fervently hope that Netflix is not planning to dishonor Wilde by stripping that critical content out of their adaptation!
