You know what? I ran as a pretty serious amateur for over a decade. I qualified for the Boston Marathon. I ran a hell of a lot of races and had a hell of a good time. I posted some really good times in my age bracket too.
Know what else? I got beat by women all the time. Every race I ran in. Even a race I won in my age bracket. Often, women flew right by me making my winning pace look slow.
Something every serious runner knows is that no matter what, somebody out there is faster than you are. Something every male amateur knows about running is that they will be beaten by women All. The. Time.
Something else we all know is that it’s because of genetic advantages. Some human beings are simply faster because they have longer legs, better innate oxygen exchange ability, faster synapses, better lactic acid clearance, whatever.
This coach is a trip. I’m seeing racism, misogyny, transphobia, you name it.
But when I look at that outstanding woman runner, I see a gorgeous human being leveraging her genetic potential with relentless discipline and training to become the best she can be.
Hats off to her!
