You know, the divide between Catholic lay people and Catholic clergy and religious is really strange. Surveys and polls consistently show that Catholic lay people are actually more likely than the American general public to support LGBTQ equality.

Catholic nuns and priests, on the other hand, are more likely than the general public to be homophobic bigots who support discriminating against and stigmatizing LGBTQ people.

This divide is significant and important because Catholic lay people have it within their power to force the clergy and the religious to change their behavior.

Given Catholic lay people donate pretty much every penny the Church spends, they wield a tremendous amount of power, but they have not organized themselves to exercise that power. If and when they wake up, they can be a force for great moral good.
