You know, I've never really thought about it before, but that "commit" construction is almost invariably negative. One commits treason, for example. In religious terms, one commits idolatry or several other "forbidden" acts.

I can't think of a single positive use for that construction. ("Commit to" is a different construction with a very different lexical meaning.)

Of course, how we say things does not necessarily dictate how we think, but you raise an interesting and important point, I think. Thanks.
