You know, I’ve been trying on Twitter to plead the case of Haitian refugees. But even with 17,000 followers who mostly identify as liberal or progressive, that’s not just a tough sell, it’s an almost impossible sell.

Not even images of snarling border cops on horseback whipping refugees to drive them back across the river to Mexico are enough to induce general outrage.

The truth is that most liberals in the United States are perfectly content, no matter how much they might occasionally pretend otherwise, to live behind borders that stop people in need.

Western chauvinism and white supremacy, indeed. We have not as a people progressed beyond those notions. We just haven’t.
