You know, I'm not ashamed to admit that I shed a few tears during both seasons of 'Heartstopper' that have been released so far. They weren't tears of sadness; they were emotional release, in part coming from a place of joy for the new generation.
Queer people of ages all over the world report that kind of reaction.
Alice Oseman and the cast of Heartstopper have talked about how surprised they were that the series has such a broad appeal. Everybody expected the show to be sort of "niche" popular among queer youth — like the webcomics and graphic novels had been.
But LGBTQ people of all ages, and many of our friends and family, fell in love with the TV series. I think we fell in love with hope, with an illustration of real progress.
And given that the series has launched important acting careers for several of the young stars, I think it's fair to say that hope isn't misplaced.
In the midst of us pretty serious anti-LGBTQ backlash, it's nice to see that the kids are all right. The younger generation is going to keep moving us forward. They're going to fall in love, find support from their families, and enjoy the hell out of their lives as they do it.
Even though the show is fiction, that's one hell of an uplifting reality!
I don't know about you, but I'm seriously looking forward to October.
Thanks for the cool story!
