You know, I used to work in a SCIF. In my very first security briefing, before I was allowed to enter the SCIF, I learned that if I removed SCI from the SCIF I would face significant prison time, even if removing the SCI was an accident. That's right, intent is not an element of the crime when it comes to compromizing Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), which by law must remain inside specially secured areas (SCIFs) because of how sensitive it is.
From what I've read, most of the White House is certified as a SCIF, though I think parts of the east wing and public parts of the west wing are not.
Country clubs, private residences, garages, temporary rented offices, etc are not SCIFs. Finding SCI in such locations equals finding evidence of a serious felony for which (again) intent is not an element.
It sure looks like political leaders have been treating national security laws with casual disregard. Will any of them be held to account like I would have been if I'd been caught even accidentally removing a document with SCI markings? I'm not holding my breath.
To be clear, by the way, SCI is a small subset of all classified documents. News reports indicate that SCI was discovered at Donald Trump's country club. I don't know if the classified documents discovered in Joe Biden's home and Mike Pence's office are alleged to include SCI.
