You know, I think I am as heat averse as you and your husband. At this point in my life, the thought of living without air conditioning during hot weather is impossible to consider.

Even here in the wilds of northern Michigan, we get plenty of oppressively hot and humid days.

But here’s a puzzlement for you. I lived in Berlin from 1985 till 1990. For the first little bit I lived on Tempelhof Central Airport, then I moved into a flat off Wittenberg Platz. At no point did I have air conditioning. You could forget about it in those buildings.

But I have no memory of ever feeling overly hot in Berlin. I have no memories of sleepless nights tossing and turning in oppressive humidity.

I don’t know whether my memory is defective or my ability to adapt to heat has changed. I do know that returning to Berlin and staying in air conditioned hotels later in life, I wanted that AC pretty badly!
