You know, I don't even like it when people thank me for my service. I mean, I don't get mad, because I know they're just being nice. But like every veteran, I signed my contract for a combination of personal and public reasons that had nothing to do with desiring gratitude.
I was poor and needed an education. I doubted my masculinity and wanted to prove myself. I loved my country and wanted to serve. I felt limited and wanted to go see the world.
I got all of that, and I don't need thanks. I'd really love it, though, if people who spend a couple days a year thanking veterans would work for a more effective Veterans Administration and a more serious national commitment to keeping the promises we make to new recruits.
