You know, I didn’t have any idea either. It’s taken me a couple years to really get a handle on things. Data is hard to come by, and even anecdotal evidence is kept closely guarded by some agencies, governmental and nongovernmental.

I sort of presumed that refugee status would involve some hoops and hurdles but that if LGBTQ people faced genuine risk, they could get asylum in places like the US, the UK, or Australia. The reality is that they can do so only rarely and in exceptional circumstances.

Canada is much better, but there aren’t many Canadas in the world.
