You know, as a young man studying American history at university, I was actually shocked (in a good way) to learn that our Republic was founded as a secular state.

When I read that Congresses during the times of Washington and Jefferson refused to pass laws restricting retail commerce on Sundays, I was astonished to discover that the majority political sentiment of the time held that religion could not intrude on civil society in that manner.

I had grown up believing the myth that America was founded as a Christian nation. Learning that most of our founders were avowed secularists was a huge surprise for me.
