You know, all of my social media profile pictures are fairly recent unfiltered selfies. I’ll admit I haven’t selected the most unflattering ones, but I look like what I am, an only moderately attractive man rapidly approaching 60. I don’t know, truth in advertising? Lack of desire to participate in the worship of youth?
Whatever the case, I was amused a few months ago when a well known conservative religious homophobe responded to one of my story-promotion tweets by posting a photo of me and saying, "Would you care about anything THIS loser said?"
She tweeted that with no irony, with no apparent conscious awareness that she was holding up a person’s (quite average) appearance as a negative indicator of their worth.
Her own social media feeds are filled with carefully cropped and filtered photos of a deliberately glamorous life. Given she’s just a couple years younger than me, I’d be curious to know what she looks like in an unfiltered selfie. Lol!
It really surprises me, and I know it probably shouldn’t, how social media has elevated a cult of the fake uber-attractive. I’m not buying in, though. If people don’t want to respect the care-worn lines in my face, I guess that’s just up to them.
