Yes! While English does this a lot— change adjectives into nouns — it doesn't always add up to respectful communication.

I would say the same for gay and queer. I feel uncomfortable when they're used as nouns. "The gays" grates on me. "The queers" or "a queer" does so just as much.

I don't love usage like "the trans community," "the queer community," or the
