Yes! While English does this a lot— change adjectives into nouns — it doesn't always add up to respectful communication.

I would say the same for gay and queer. I feel uncomfortable when they're used as nouns. "The gays" grates on me. "The queers" or "a queer" does so just as much.

I don't love usage like "the trans community," "the queer community," or "the gay community." Mostly, I don't like the construction because it implies a unity or structure that doesn't really exist. (Sometimes, if I'm intentionally writing about community, I might write something like "queer communities" or "gay communities," using the plural to imply diversity.

I like to say (and write) things like "transgender people" and even "transgender humans" — to emphasize personhood and common humanity. Same for for gay, lesbian, queer, etc.
