Yes, well the point is not to say that ancient eunuchs were with the equivalents of modern transgender people, only to acknowledge that many of them did have variant gender expression and did not face Biblical condemnation for it. (South Asian transgender scholars even point out that today’s hijiri are the cultural descendants of ancient eunuchs, and are viewed in South Asian cultures as a third gender, which is probably how people thought of them during Biblical times.)

All of this is quite the enormous monkey wrench for conservative Christians who want to say the Bible clearly condemns variant gender expression. They already have their hands full trying to shoehorn vague passages into meaning God condemns trans people. Add in the fact that biblical writers didn’t have anything negative to say about eunuchs, and they’ve got an insurmountable theological problem on their hands.
