Yes! One of our editors at Prism & Pen finds themself in the same position. They sometimes venture out on their own, but only by evading and avoiding family members, who — as members of the world's "largest democracy" —are absolutely committed to sexist control of women. (Our editor is not a woman, but their family will acknowledge them only as a woman, being as transphobic as they are sexist.)

Their whole society is set up like that. Women aren't completely oppressed, but they are absolutely expected to confine themselves to certain limited societal roles.

Rape and murder of women are out of control there, but when women take to the streets to protest, as they did last week in the face of the gang rape and murder of a woman doctor, men meet them with violence, with beatings in the street, telling them to go home, be quiet, and take care of their families.

Public sentiment, as expressed by the men who are in charge of journalism, is largely disdainful of those women protesters.

And what do they cite in defense of their sexism? Traditional values. Religious values.

Just like conservative Christians in the United States cite their traditional values in defense of treating women like shit.

I won't pull any punches. I was raised in traditional conservative Christianity, and those people are disgusting. They're willfully ignorant, superstitious, science-denying fools.

Hell, they visit a creationism "museum" and a nearby "replica" of Noah's Ark from the Christian Bible, because they believe the Bible is a literal work of history — without error even in the smallest detail.

So, obviously, their minds are not open to anything. Anyone who can be that howlingly ignorant and stupid is not going to be open to the idea that ANY of their traditional religious beliefs are wrong.

I grew up in it.

I listened to woman after woman arguing in favor of their own silence in church, their own religious obligation to obey their husbands — arguing in effect for their own oppression.

How do they justify it? Well, by superstitious magic of course. God's going to make it all okay. Obey your husband, and God will ensure that he treats you right by cherishing you. Have faith, girls!

It's hard to understate how ignorant, stupid, and disgusting these people are. The men AND the women. They are implacably sexist and proud of it.
