Yes, I lived in Berlin in the 1980s and many of my friends were those kids who went to those schools where they learned those lessons.
We had hard conversations about it, and I came away with sense that facing up to the trauma, much of which existed in their own families among their own grandparents, made them more mature, thoughtful people.
My own family have deep working class roots centered in part of America that is no longer prosperous. Many of them voted for Trump. Some of their support is based on trauma, while some of it is not.
I’ve just written a rather raw personal reflection on why my family are Trump supporters.
