I have a friend ( Mike DiGirolamo ) who likes to say that LGBTQ rights are simply human rights, that there’s nothing special about fighting for rights that all human beings ought to equally enjoy.

Same-sex marriage is just marriage.

It’s the marriage of human beings endowed with all the same rights and dignity as any other humans on the planet.

Of course, I’m comforted to know that the story I told above could not happen today in the United States or in many other parts of the world.

I remember with a smile that Australia just approved same-sex marriage after the results of a mail-in poll that indicated overwhelming public support.

Sadly, we have much work to do.

In other parts of the world, like Nigeria and Chechnya, to cite two random examples, just being LGBTQ can mean being at risk of life and limb.

We have come a long way.

We have a long way to go.
