Yes, curation is one piece of the pie if you are looking for a story to have an impact and be widely read on Medium.

But curation alone can surely not guarantee a decent level of readership.

I remember once being so excited after I spent days writing a story I cared deeply about. I researched it thoroughly, wrote it as powerfully as I knew how, and provided all kinds of value.

Somebody at Medium must have agreed because it got curated in five topics! That was a record for me.

Then …

Almost nobody read it.

The headline was too dry. The image wasn’t very compelling. I had included a lot of data in the body that might have been better off in footnotes or something.

People’s eyes were glazing over.

So, while I really do want my articles to be curated because I know that that can be a big help, I also have to keep in mind that much of the job of earning readership is up to me and how I present my work.

Something to think about.
