Yes, but what do we do practically? As an artist, I spend a good deal of my time writing short stories and novels about love and the human condition, stories that feature LGBTQ people.

Storytelling, after all, is one of the most powerful forms of activism in the world.

But getting people to engage with stories like that is a long slow process. People who fear transgender folks teaching their children anal sex (like, really?) have such unrealistic ideas about LGBTQ people that they aren’t likely to pick up a novel or watch “Love, Simon.”

Having grown up in the Evangelical world myself, I really don’t know what the answer is other than to keep doing what we’re doing.

If there were a way to directly address unreasonable fears, I’d love to know how, but I don’t know any solution readily presents itself.
