Yes, but sadly, conservative forces in the US try to pervert that obvious function by positioning philanthropy as the ONLY valid method of improving life for everyone. They like to say that churches and charity should help people, not government — and then when government fills those functions, they’re “stealing” from taxpayers, who ought to make their own choices about how to help.
They could use a few good lessons in equality, solidarity, and collaboration — I think!
