Yeah, the disconnect between American lay Catholics, who tend to be quite liberal or at least much more so than evangelical Protestants, and the Catholic hierarchy is stark. Catholic bishops in the United States are unswervingly authoritarian and harshly judgmental, holding views and taking actions (like the suicide thing) that are objectively evil. It’s hard to imagine how Catholic lay people tolerate the sick fucks who run the Church in the U.S.
