Yeah, I watch this kid on YouTube. He's maybe 20 or 21 years old, and he fitted out a van after he graduated high school and did the whole van life thing. He's not a celebrity, doesn't have a million followers or anything close, but he's living the life. He counts his pennies, he doesn't indulge in luxuries, and he puts out enough videos to keep a minimal income streaming in.
He says he's happy. He likes making enough money to buy gas and food and travel around to see the country. He's not interested in luxury and status symbols. He's got his van, a dog, a friend he travels with, and that's it.
What's remarkable about this to me isn't that he does it, but that he celebrates it. He wants this life, he planned this life, and he's proud of this life.
What's more, enough people are dreaming the dream with him that they're essentially paying him to do it by watching his videos. This is new. I think a decade ago, people would have scorned his life because he doesn't have wear brand clothes, doesn't aspire to luxury, doesn't invest in status symbols.
American attitudes and values are changing right in front of our eyes. We should pay attention.
