Whether this is the "real" reason or not, in GOP leaders' heads, is a matter of speculation. Targeting trans people is, on its own, reason enough to fight tooth and nail. Trans people are people who deserve to live happy and fulfilled lives, free of attempts at state control. I realize you aren't trying to dismiss that, but this transition feels a little awkward in that respect.
