When I was a child, we had a cockatiel. She had the run (err, fly) of the house, only confined to her cage at night, when she slept anyway.

She was a very social creature and seemed happy flying around and landing on shoulders to peck and nibble at ears.

Thinking of such a gregarious animal locked in a cage makes me very sad.
