When Act Up members got beat up by cops, on camera, public sentiment came down heavily on our side. Don't get me wrong, somebody who's in imminent risk of physical harm should obviously defend themself. But there's a difference between self-defense and attack. Also, as difficult as it might feel to curl up in a ball, the publicity that comes from that when on camera is gold. That probably sounds crass, I realize. And I'm absolutely not suggesting anybody try to manufacture a photo op. I'm just thinking back to how this stuff really works when it comes to winning hearts and minds.
