What’s so sad, tragic, and horrifyingly instructive is that even though pretty much every single conscious person in the United States recognizes Trump’s racism, Sam, the Republican Party is now the Party of Trump.
Convicting Trump in the Senate would require 18 Republican senators to vote against Trump.
18.
A dozen plus six. Not very many. You could cook for a small crowd like that in a normal kitchen and host a dinner in your house. Maybe a backyard barbeque.
But 18 Republican senators to vote against Trump are not going to be found. Not going to happen. That’s tragic beyond belief. It’s not only an indictment of the moral depravity of Republican politicians who have sold their souls to a bullying, jingoistic racist; it’s commentary on all of us. It’s instruction. It’s a history lesson writ contemporary.
Because this is how it happens.
This is how evil is allowed to take charge and prevail.
18 Republican senators.
That’s all we need.
