What’s so discouraging about this is how predictable it was. The Conservative Party buried their heads in the sand rather than acknowledge that the fragile peace in Northern Ireland depended on the political and economic cohesion with the ROI that EU (or at least common market) membership made possible.
I think the government’s radio silence is a tacit acknowledgement that Johnson & Company have no idea what to do. They preferred to pretend this intractable problem wasn’t actually very significant, and now faced with the reality, they are as bereft of solutions as Theresa May was.
Analysts are already speaking of the reunification of Ireland as inevitable now. They seldom mention the inevitable violence that will likely destroy so many lives in the process.
The disintegration of the United Kingdom (Scotland is on its way out too) was certainly not the Conservative Party’s goal in this fiasco, but unless a leader emerges with the political power and popular charisma to lead the UK back into the common market, disintegration seems the only realistic outcome.
