What’s really interesting is that Mainline Protestants are perceived as being more liberal, but the numbers show that average church goers may not be tracking with their leadership.
The Catholic question is a really interesting one. Catholic doctrine is viciously homophobic and Catholic bishops tend to be really horrible bigots. But American Catholics seem to mostly ignore the Church’s teachings and ignore the bishops.
On one hand, that’s a good thing, obviously. On the other, it’s frustrating. Given that a good 80% of American Catholics disagree with Church doctrine, if they stood together in strength, they could force the Church to stop spreading its toxic messages about LGBTQ people.
I wish they would. I don’t understand why they don’t.
