What’s sad is that whatever reform the Synod ends up producing next year will almost certainly be minor, probably almost insignificant. The cardinals know that, but they're still having hissy fits.

They are so emotionally (or whatever) invested in oppressing women and queer people, that even the possibility of minor reform sends them into flights of fury.

Sigh.

It's hard for me to imagine people that invested in being cruel. I don't get it. I've never understood why so many people are so foul and awful — and unapologetically public about it.

I doubt I ever will understand the human capacity for evil and cruelty. But to know it exists, all I have to do is look at a Catholic priest.
