What really strikes me is how all the Republican outrage seems to be so starkly “manufactured” rather than sincere.

Of the six books the Seuss estate decided no longer to sell, only “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" is widely known. And later in life, Seuss himself expressed deep discomfort with how he originally drew a Chinese man in that book. With good cause. He recognized his stereotypical portrayal was harmful.

Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head are still … Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, with the entire line of toys rebranded to The Potato Heads. Will the Republicans now begin to express outrage about a movie called The Smiths?

They can’t possibly believe their own line of silliness, which probably explains why their public statements are so disingenuous and contrary to fact.

All this nonsense sadly demonstrates how the Republican Party has devolved into theatricality and populism in search of … anything they can possibly stand for.
