What really strikes me about this is that where I live the equivalent of £5,000.00 would be life-changing money for many people.
And nobody would be spending it on a handbag.
People around here wonder if minimum wage will ever top $10.00 an hour. They wonder if they’re going to continue to be able to afford gasoline so they can make the increasingly long drives necessary to buy food in our pandemic-induced scarcity.
They wonder if heating fuel prices are going to go through the roof again this winter and whether they need to clean out the old wood-burning stove. They don’t have the luxury to worry about that stove worsening global warming.
They worry about affording warm clothing for their children.
£5,000.00 for a handbag whose function could be exactly served by a bag costing £10.00? Obscene, indeed.
