We've seen something similar here in the United States with a trans woman and former athlete who has become an outspoken Republican and strong supporter of Donald Trump. Republicans name drop her every chance they get to disclaim responsibility for their intensely transphobic legislative ideas and policy actions. A tiny percentage of people from marginalized groups can always be counted on to support their oppressors, and depressors are usually quick to take advantage of that.

Representation isn't always positive.

As a gay man, it flabbergasts me that a certain Richard Grenell, who is gay and was a cabinet secretary and ambassador in the Trump Administration, is often cited by the Republican Party as evidence of their support for LGBTQ people. The man openly supports the Victor Orban regime and went to work for an international legal organization that has literally advocated in different places around the world to criminalize homosexuality.

Should we be glad for such representation? Obviously, not. I'll reserve my joy for people who actually represent our interests.
