We’re nonviolent, but God says y’all should be put to death. Wow. The dissonance is stunning.
Something like this happened a couple years ago in Poland when an Ikea employee there posted on a company bulletin board a Bible verse from the Old Testament saying that homosexuals should be put to death.
His managers told him to remove the post or suffer consequences, and when he refused they fired him for breaking company policies on hate speech and incitement of violence.
The Catholic Church had an absolute shit fit, influential bishops in Poland complaining the man’s religious freedom had been violated. Priests all over the country preached sermons about how God’s word is sacred and must never be diminished. It doesn’t look like anybody preached about loving your neighbor and not judging others.
Two months later, mobs were attacking Pride parades, people yelling religious slogans and beating the fuck out of participants, hospitalizing many, including a 14-year-old boy who had his jaw broken in two places. The mobs had largely been organized by priests and bishops.
Did they apologize after and deeply examine their behavior? No, they doubled down, equating LGBTQ equality with Soviet oppression, fomenting even more violence in the name of their God.
