Well, you have to understand the context of the early 1980s when this all happened, Judy.

Some people did accept gay people then, but it was very much not the rule, even among progressive people. And for those who did have open minds, lots of misunderstandings still existed.

Education was extremely lacking, unlike today where a simple Google search can bring up all the information you need in mere moments.

Mike had a heart of gold yes, in that he was by nature a kind-hearted, generous man. He would never want to intentionallly hurt anyone.

But he knew next to nothing about LGBT issues or realities. He accepted me almost by instinct because I was his friend.

It took some time for him to learn about sexual orientation issues in general, though.
