Well, yes, but the idea that most homophobes are closeted gay men is something of an urban myth that doesn’t always do us big favors. It’s true that repressed gay men are highly likely to be loudly homophobic; that’s the foundation of the myth. But it’s not true that most loud homophobes are repressed gay men. The sad fact is that most of them are just straight guys submerged in a culture that teaches them to hate gay guys.
