Well, sobriety didn't last long. What an object lesson in the power of addiction! I had a conversation that touched on this yesterday with a candidate for sheriff in Dutchess County. (Interview coming out later today.)
She spoke of the need for law enforcement agencies to strike a balance between drug interdiction and addiction intervention.
I don't want to put words in her mouth, because that part of the conversation was just a momentary side issue and I don't know what her official positions are, but I suspect the events in this chapter illustrate part of what she was talking about.
Even under the threat of prison, you and Richard kept doing meth, not a rational decision by any stretch of imagination – even though both of you are rational people whose lives had been fine before addiction.
