I might add from direct personal experience that the New York Times was never an ally of gay people either, until gay equality was much more of a done deal.

When I was a member of Act Up and Queer Nation in the 1990s, we lived with the reality that the editorial board of the New York Times were our enemies.

Little has changed. The Times has always struggled with authoritarian, conservative impulses despite being based in a relatively progressive city.
