Well, maybe things have changed a bit since I lived in Chelsea, but “bridge and tunnel people” used to be a pretty common pejorative, frequently directed at people from New Jersey, who were seen as unwelcome, fairly uncouth outsiders. Of course that’s terribly snobbish and I don’t approve of it, but it is a reflection of the general human tendency to be suspicious of those from different places.

I’m sorry you had such a hard time in Portland. I wish you a much better experience where you are now.
