Well, if it's any comfort, neither the EU nor the US are putting ground forces in the right places to stop an invasion with military force. Lots of belligerent talk is going on, and it's likely Russia is going to walk into Ukraine and take it. But if anybody plans to stop them, they haven't made much effort to prepare.

Only tank divisions and mechanized infantry can stop tank divisions and mechanized infantry. Russia has a amassed divisions on three flanks, staging them for a classic 'pincer' ground invasion. NATO has not moved pieces onto the board in opposition. They talked about it yesterday, like maybe they will at some point in the future.

The fact that they did that in a public announcement tells you that a whole lot of stuff has to be going on behind the scenes. Because as a general principle, you don't tell a military opponent that you're getting ready to make their job harder, unless you have a damn good reason for it.

If the US and the EU are seriously worried that Putin is about to invade right now, it's weird that they would have made an announcement telling him he'd better hurry up.

I don't know what it all means, but clearly there's more going on than newspapers are reporting. Probably because reporters just don't know.

I have some military experience and training, and I can't figure it out.
