Well, I don't know if it's "abhorrant." It's just getting dunked under the water, after all. But it's middlin' strange at least. I'm not sure I undstand what happened, given reporting is less than clear. I do think it's a hoot that conservative Christians who so often lately push for parental rights seem not to to care much about parental rights in this instance.
